Devlog #1

Hello Everyone,

I'm Chanda with Visual Butterfly!
I'm the writer and coder working for the demo Aella of Athens. There will be many changes throughout the game. One will be the design choice. Right now, we are using place holders as backgrounds as I was unable to find someone to work on backgrounds in time, but that doesn't mean I won't try to make the backgrounds more stimulating. The backgrounds were hard to find and slap a filter on.

What you may notice is that the characters are looking a little flat! That's because in the demo version we will be using flats instead of the full detailed version due to time constraints since the clothes are very detailed. The clothes were made by Timothy-Henri on deviantart while the character sprites were created by Red Lily. I got to meet Timothy while scrolling through adoptables and Red Lily through another jam!

What I actually wanted to talk about today is the character design for Persephone. As some of you know, Persephone is the wife of Hades. This game takes place before Hades and Persephone become husband and wife.

Fun Fact: Persephone wasn't always called Persephone. Her initial name was Kore which meant 'maiden.' When she married Hades, it changed to Persephone which means 'bringer of death/destruction.' I've kept her name as Persephone for clarity.

Anyway, when I had the initial concept art for Persephone, I imagined her as black hair with red eyes. A friend of mine thought of her as blonde with red eyes. So Red Lily thought to compromise with white hair and red eyes! What I wasn't expecting was for her to actually give me those three concepts and now, I am at a loss! I would like you to help me decide which Persephone should be in the game? As far as the demo goes, she will not be in it much, but in the game as a whole, she will be a prominent character!

Persephone's Look

Aside from Persephone, I would like to talk about the game overall and how it is looking so far! With the extended due date, I am most grateful. I will have to cut a few scenes short from what I had initially planned, however. The demo is at 4k+ words so far and I know where I am ending it.

I am simultaneously coding at the end of the day before I head to bed, so that I don't fall behind. Here's how it goes:

  1. I finish a page of writing
  2. I put that into coding
  3. Then I test it

It also gives me a break from writing that way I don't hit a hitch or anything like that.

Anyway, everyone please stay safe and healthy!
